Guidelines and Help for Creating and Editing Articles

Whether you want to create a new page or edit an existing page please follow these editing guidelines.

The Quick and Dirty Guide to Page Creation

Type the name of the page you want to create in the search box on any page and click Go. This will either take you to an already existing page with that name or present your with the following line of text:

There is no page titled ":your article's name". You can create this page.

Just click on create this page and start editing.

Editing existing pages is even easier. Just click edit at the top of any page. You must log in first in order to see the edit tab on a couple of pages.

Wiki Markup Cheat Sheet

Here is a small cheat sheet for editing:

  • Adding a link to another website

[http://www.wikiyourrights.com Descriptive text goes here]

The first space character separates the URI from the link text.

  • To create boldface text, enclose it between three consecutive single quote characters.

This is '''bold''' text.

  • To create italicized text, enclose it between two consecutive single quote characters.

This is ''italicized'' text.

  • To link to another page within this wiki, enclose the page name within double brackets.

[[Current events]]

  • One of the easiest ways to learn more about editing is to see how other people do it. Simply view an article that displays some formatting technique which you would like to know more about and click edit at the top of that article. Then in the edit box, look at the markup to see how it was done.

Formalities

There are no formal procedures required before posting or editing articles. However, please keep the following in mind.

  • Please feel free to post whatever you feel is important for other people to know.
  • Unless you find a page which specifically states otherwise, you should never need to ask permission to edit articles. Check for any notes on the articles discussion page first.
  • Copyrighted works can be posted provided they follow the guidelines for including copyrighted materials.
  • Please try to be factually accurate with the information you are posting.

Neatness

While neatness or tidiness of articles in this wiki is pleasant and useful, it is not required when posting or editing articles!

What you post can always be tidied up later by you or someone else.

Getting information into the wiki for others to see is the important part.

Although it does make the information easier to read and comprehend, making sure every sentence is grammatically correct, etc. is not required.

News feeds

News feeds can be used to view updated articles within WikiYourRights.com.

Talk pages

Discussion pages are also referred to as talk pages. If you look at the very top of this page, you will see a link labeled "Discussion". Following this link will take you to the talk or discussion page.

As you have already probably figured out, the talk pages are for discussing the contents of the actual article. Each article has it's own talk page.

Posting a note

Please sign your notes as described below.

If you wish to post a note on any talk page, click on the addition sign (+) at the top of the page.

Messages left on any talk page are viewable by everyone.

Please see talk or discussion pages.

Talk page signature

On talk pages, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~).

Example:

The wiki software converts this:

~~~~
Into this: (This is an example signature, yours will be in the same format.)
'User name' 01:26, 8 February 2007 (EST)
Notice: 'User name' will be replaced with your actual login name unless you are not logged in. In that case, your IP address will be displayed in the signature instead.
Moving articles
Please make a request on the articles talk page if you want to rename/move an article that you did not create and also for pages that have been edited by others.
The articles edit history, talk page contents and talk page history do not follow the article when you simply cut and paste the article to another page.
When moving a page, make sure to create a redirect from the old page to the new page.
Our policy pages
Our General disclaimer, Privacy policy and our About WikiYourRights pages may be of some help as well. You can find a link to these pages at the bottom of every page in the wiki.
The One Man Band
A note from Speedracer, the creator of this wiki:
First, a quick answer to your question: YES! You can edit this page without asking permission!
Why did I create this Wiki?
In my opinion, it seems that people are to busy watching American Idol or worrying about who is going to get Anna Nicole's baby than paying attention to what will directly effect them. If they don't open their eyes soon, they may never be able to stop the runaway train heading down the dead end track.
My analogy: Someone is walking down the sidewalk so preoccupied with something on the other side of the street that they fail to see the sign post they are about to run into. I'm just trying to say, "Lookout!" and direct their attention to something more important.
Unfortunately, people are so distracted with what is going on in their own micro-environments, they fail to see the big picture of what is going on in the real world in which they live.
I created the Your-Rights.com website because I wanted to share the information that I found while web surfing, listening to Air America, etc. with other people. I feel it is important for other people to have a greater chance to see what I have seen.
After operating Your-Rights.com for over four years, I was getting a bit burned out from blogging about all the depressing current events. I decided to give others the opportunity to share their knowledge and concerns through the medium of a wiki.
I feel a wiki is a great way to share information for several reasons. It is fairly easy to use the wiki software. Unlike most other web interfaces, a wiki allows anyone to update existing articles or create completely new ones. This allows anyone to fix typo's, remove false information and add additional information.
By viewing the popular pages list, you will notice that people do actually view the pages within this wiki. Unfortunately, besides me there has only been one other person contribute anything besides SPAM content.
Here is something that I feel deserves more attention, especially since people are starting to be more aware of the issues involved with global warming.
The article you will see by following this link is a short paragraph which has a lot of links. If you view each of the links, you will learn a lot about this issue, which definitely needs some real public debate.
There is a lot of very important information within that article. If you take the time to review the provided links, you will probably be appalled by the inner workings of the War on drugs!
The above link goes to my other website, which I designed. It may not be the best website that you have ever seen. Some people have even told me, "That site sucks!" Aesthetics are nice to look at, but the information is what is most important. As you most likely already know, mean people will drive you into the ground if you let them. And besides, if you don't like the way it looks, why not offer to help make it look better?
I try my best to get people to open their eyes. Hopefully I am creating a positive effect and making a difference by helping people start thinking about the world in which they live instead of the world of their favorite celebrities.
If you know of something which you feel would be beneficial for others to know about, please feel free to go ahead and add your information. Please don't be afraid that you might mess everything up or something similar. Anything that you could possibly break is very easy to fix!
If you can't figure something out, feel free to ask me for help! I have contact information on my user page.
